And in the end it is not the years in your life that counts, it is the life in your years

I am who I am

I am who I am....

Inspired by the recent Orange advertising:

I am me, I am who I am because of me, I am who I am because of the choices I have made, I am who I am because of the route I have taken, I am who I am because of the cards I have dealt, I am me.

I am not who I am because of any girl I have kissed, and I am certainly not me because of any teacher, neither those who passed or failed me. I am sure not me because of Miss O’Brian, my first real crush, nor am I me because of Mr Lennon the only decent teacher I can remember.

I am not me because of the tosser bosses I have worked for, for which there are three, and then again, I am certainly not me because of the good ones of which there are many more. I am me because I what I did for them, because of what I gave to them, I am me because I gave to the bad ones as much as the good.

I am not me because of the hotel guests, because of the owners or staff I have worked with, I am not me because of the millions I have made for others. I am me for the invention I have brought, I am me for the creation I have delivered, I am me for the sacrifice I have made to invent, to create, to deliver. I am me for what I have given to others, given so they can be themselves, not so they can be me.

I am me for the love I give my team, but never for what they give me. I am not me for what I expect from them, I have no right to expect anything. I am me for the songs I sing, for the miles I have travelled, for the ground I have stood in their name. I am not me because of my god, Dennis Bergkamp, my first idol, Liam Brady, or the legend that is Rocky Rocastle, I am me because of the unconditional love I have for three old men. I am not even me for my love of a ruined building, my home, my Highbury, and I never will be me because of Ashburton Grove.

I am not me because of the city I live in, the city I call home, nor am I me because of the town I left all those years ago. I am not me because of Ireland, or Eire. I am not me because of the copious lands I have visited or those I have yet to see. I am me because I choose to make the journey.

I am me because I made me, I am me because I made the choices, the decisions, the route of my life. I am me because of my mind, my heart, my eyes. I am me because I love who me is. I am me..... Paul Kavanagh
